YouTube Monetization Requirements in 2026 (Full Breakdown)

To earn money directly on YouTube you have to join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). As of 2026 there are two tiers — an earlier entry point that unlocks fan funding for small channels, and a higher bar that unlocks ad revenue. This guide walks through every requirement, what actually counts toward them, how to apply, how long review takes, and a realistic plan to get there — verified against multiple current sources.

The two tiers at a glance (2026)

YouTube now lets you in earlier with a smaller tier that unlocks fan-funding tools, then unlocks full ad revenue at a higher tier. You can hit either tier through long-form watch hours or through Shorts views — you don't need both.

  • Entry tier (fan funding): 500 subscribers + 3 public uploads in the last 90 days + 3,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months OR 3 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.
  • Full tier (ad revenue): 1,000 subscribers + 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months OR 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.

What the entry tier actually unlocks

Reaching 500 subscribers doesn't turn on ads — but it does turn on the fan-funding tools, which can earn meaningfully for an engaged audience even before you qualify for ads:

  • Channel memberships — recurring monthly support for perks.
  • Super Thanks, Super Chat and Super Stickers — tips on videos and live streams.
  • Shopping — featuring products to your audience.

What the full tier unlocks

At 1,000 subscribers plus the watch-time bar, you become eligible for the big one — a share of ad revenue — plus everything in the entry tier. For long-form videos YouTube keeps 45% and you keep 55% of the ad revenue your videos generate. From here, ads, fan funding, and (off-platform) sponsorships and affiliates can all run together.

The non-negotiables (don't skip these)

Hitting the numbers isn't enough on its own. You also need:

  • Two-step verification enabled on your Google account.
  • No active Community Guidelines strikes on the channel.
  • Full compliance with YouTube's monetization policies (this is where most rejections happen — see below).
  • Living in a country/region where YPP is available.
  • A linked AdSense/payments account to actually get paid.

What counts toward watch hours — and what doesn't

This trips up a lot of creators. Only valid public watch time counts toward the 4,000 hours:

  • ✅ Counts: watch time from your public long-form videos, including live streams and premieres.
  • ❌ Doesn't count: watch time from private or unlisted videos, deleted videos, or content set to 'not made for kids' issues aside — if you delete or privatise a video, its hours come off your total.
  • ❌ Shorts watch time does NOT count toward the 4,000 hours — Shorts have their own separate view threshold (3M / 10M).
  • So pick one lane: chase 4,000 long-form hours, or chase the Shorts view count. Mixing a few of each rarely gets you over either line.

Watch hours vs Shorts — the realistic math

4,000 watch hours sounds huge but depends entirely on average view duration. At a 10-minute average view duration you only need ~24,000 views; at 4 minutes you need ~60,000. This is why long, genuinely engaging tutorials hit the bar faster than lots of short, low-retention clips.

  • Long-form path: best if you make tutorials, deep-dives, vlogs or reviews people watch through. Fewer views needed, and it builds toward ad revenue (the higher-paying format).
  • Shorts path: best if you post high-volume short clips. 10M Shorts views in 90 days is a lot (~110k/day) but achievable for a clip that pops — just remember Shorts pay far less per view.

How to apply (step by step)

YouTube doesn't auto-enable monetization the second you qualify — you apply:

  • 1. In YouTube Studio, open the 'Earn' tab. It shows your live progress toward each threshold.
  • 2. When you cross a tier, an 'Apply' button appears — accept the Partner Program terms.
  • 3. Set up / link your payments (AdSense) account.
  • 4. Your channel goes into review (a mix of automated and human checks).
  • 5. You get an email with the decision. If approved, turn on the monetization features you want.

How long review takes — and why channels get rejected

Review typically takes up to about a month (sometimes faster). The most common rejection reason is 'reused' or non-original content — compilations, reaction with little added value, or content lifted from elsewhere. To pass, your channel should show original work, a clear theme, and compliance with the monetization policies. If you're rejected you can fix the issues and re-apply (usually after about 21 days).

A realistic timeline

Most channels that make it take 6–18 months of consistent, search-friendly uploads to reach 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours. There's no shortcut that's safe — never buy subscribers or views; bought engagement doesn't watch, wrecks your metrics, and can get your channel suspended from YPP entirely.

Don't wait for ads to start earning

Ad revenue is just one stream — and usually the smallest for a new channel. Affiliate links, sponsorships and your own products carry no subscriber minimum and can earn from your very first videos. Many creators earn more from one sponsorship or their storefront than from months of ad revenue, so build these in parallel while you work toward YPP.

Frequently asked questions

Can I monetize with 500 subscribers in 2026?

Yes — the entry tier (500 subs + 3 recent uploads + 3,000 watch hours or 3M Shorts views in 90 days) unlocks fan-funding tools like memberships and Super Thanks. Full ad revenue still needs 1,000 subs and 4,000 watch hours (or 10M Shorts views).

How many views is 4,000 watch hours?

It depends on average view duration: about 24,000 views at a 10-minute average, or ~60,000 at 4 minutes. Retention matters far more than raw view count, which is why engaging long videos qualify faster.

Do Shorts views count toward the 4,000 watch hours?

No. Shorts watch time doesn't count toward the 4,000-hour long-form requirement. Shorts have their own separate threshold (3 million views for the entry tier, 10 million for the full tier in 90 days).

Why was my monetization application rejected?

Most often for 'reused' or non-original content, or a monetization-policy issue. Make your content clearly original, keep a consistent theme, fix the flagged issues, and re-apply (usually after about 21 days).

How much does YouTube take from ad revenue?

For long-form videos, YouTube keeps 45% and you keep 55% of the ad revenue your videos earn. The split is different (less favorable) for Shorts, which use a revenue-pool model.

How long does it take to get monetized?

Reaching the thresholds usually takes 6–18 months of consistent uploads, and review after you apply takes up to about a month. Buying subs/views to speed it up backfires and risks suspension.
